What is Sim Swap Fraud?
Sim Swap fraud is when Fraudsters make a clone of you Sim card and then they use that clone Sim card to transfer money from your bank account to their bank account.
How does Sim Swap fraud works?
Some days ago my friend received a call on WhatsApp from Pakistan, where the person on call told him that he is talking from “WhatsApp head office” Mumbai.
And he told him that he has won a lottery of 25,00,000 on his WhatsApp number.
My friend had the knowledge about this kinds of frauds and scams, so he knew that this person will now ask him about his debit/credit cards CVV number, or he will ask him about the OTP number.
But he didn’t asked any of these information from my friend. Instead what he asked my friend will blow out your mind.
He asked him the numbers written at the back of his Sim card.
As soon as my friend heard this, he disconnected the ongoing call.
There are some numbers at the backside of our Sim card.
These numbers are Unique numbers which are created for every different Sim cards.
Our every personal informations like:- Our Adhar card number, bank account number, etc. are stored in this unique number.
So what these scammers do is they call us on WhatsApp and tell us that we have won a Lottery of particular amount and ask these unique numbers of our Sim card from us.
Now it is not necessary that everytime you will receive a call from Pakistan only.
It can be any country from where you can receive these kinds of calls.
So when they get these numbers they get access to all our data stored in our unique number.
And then they create a clone of our Sim card and divert all the OTP messages on their clone Sim card.
And this is not the only way through which they do fraud and steal all our money from our banks.
They have 1 more method where they make a team of people. Then they get some informations of people who have large amount of land properties.
Then they send the team to those peoples who have lands, etc.
They go there and tell them that we are from Jio, or Airtel, or Vodafone company. And we want to build a Mobile tower on your land of respective company.
They then give them the small amount and in return takes unique number of their Sim card.
And then they steal money from their bank accounts by creating a clone of Sim card.
How to avoid Sim Swap fraud?
Whenever you get such calls where these people ask the unique code number written at the back of your Sim card, disconnect the call as soon as possible. And report that number on whatsapp.
And if these people comes to your house asking the permission of making any kind of Mobile network towers. Do not give them your personal data and make a call at your nearest police station or at the Cyber crime office.
This way you can avoid this fraud and keep yourself safe from these peoples.
